First time color? How to prepare and what to expect
By Tre Panache Experience | October 20, 2026
Quick note: I’m appointment-only, women-only, LGBTQ friendly, wheelchair accessible, and I keep the space private and neat. Free parking is available, and I take card payments.
One of the things I hear most from first-timers is, “I’m nervous, ” and I get it. Color feels permanent, and the unknown is usually the stressful part. A long-time client once put it simply: she said she trusts me and that I’m “a really nice person, ” which is honestly how I want every appointment to feel, calm and handled. Your first color appointment starts with a short consultation and hair assessment, followed by a patch test if needed, the coloring process (often 30 to 90 minutes depending on what we’re doing), and clear aftercare so you know how to keep it looking fresh.
Your first-time color checklist (so you don’t overthink it)
If you’re coming in to cover gray or make a change for cosmetic reasons, prep is straightforward. Here’s what I generally recommend so I can give you an even, predictable result.
- Bring photos of what you like and what you don’t like. Two or three images is plenty.
- Tell me your hair history, especially recent box color, highlights, relaxer, keratin, henna, or anything that changed your texture. This affects how color grabs.
- Show up with clean, dry hair and skip heavy oils, edge control, dry shampoo, and thick leave-ins that day. I want to see your true canvas.
- Avoid brand-new chemical services for about two weeks if you can. If you can’t, just tell me so I can plan around it.
- Give yourself time. Even though the listed color service is 45 minutes, first-time visits often take longer because we talk through goals, do sectioning, and double-check the plan.
If you’re coming from Scarsdale, White Plains, Ardsley, Elmsford, or Greenville, a little planning helps. I’m right in Hartsdale near the Central Avenue corridor, and it’s easy to get to from Tarrytown Road and the Bronx River Parkway, so you’re not circling for hours before you even sit down.
Inside a color appointment: consultation, tests, application, finish
When you arrive, we start with a real conversation. I’ll look at your hair in person, talk through your goal, and ask about your routine. I’m big on listening, and clients mention my attention to detail and that I take time to make suggestions based on the true state of their hair. That’s important for first time color because the “idea color” and the “right-now color” aren’t always the same thing.
Step 1: hair assessment and shade planning
I’m checking things like porosity (how your hair absorbs), density, and what your ends look like compared to your roots. If you’re natural, heat-styled, or transitioning, that matters. A lot of my regulars come to me because they want their hair to stay healthy through services, including color.
Step 2: patch test or strand test, when it makes sense
If you’ve had reactions before, you’re trying a brand-new product, or you’re just unsure, I may recommend a patch test. Sometimes a strand test is the better move, especially if we need to see how your hair will lift or take tone. These aren’t “extra steps for no reason.” They protect your scalp and help us avoid surprises.
Step 3: application and processing time
Then we apply your color. The processing time depends on what we’re doing and what your hair needs. A gray-coverage refresh is usually quicker than a more involved color change. Plan for about 1.5 to 3 hours for your first visit so you don’t feel rushed. If you’re squeezing this in between work and life, tell me. I’m used to busy schedules around Hartsdale, including people commuting on Metro-North who need a clear time estimate.
“Treasure is an absolute treasure!!! She is knowledgeable, patient and meticulous!!!! I’ve found my new forever hair stylist!!! I feel and look amazing!!! I’ve fallen back in love with my hair!!!”

Step 4: rinse, condition, and the finish
After we rinse, I’ll condition and finish your hair in a way that fits your day-to-day, not just a “fresh out of the chair” moment. Clients regularly tell me they leave feeling healthy and shiny, not dried out. And yes, I’ll tell you exactly how to maintain it at home.
After your color: the 5 habits that keep it rich (and your hair healthy)
Right after color, your hair should feel clean, conditioned, and comfortable. If your scalp is a little tender, that can happen, especially if you’re sensitive. Tell me right away during your appointment so I can adjust. My goal is that you leave loving your hair and still feeling like it’s yours, just better.
My go-to aftercare basics
- Use a color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo to slow fading.
- Do a weekly deep conditioner. Color looks better on hydrated hair, period.
- Keep hot tools in check. If you heat style, use a protectant and try not to crank the temperature.
- Protect your ends. Most fading and dryness shows up there first.
- Rebook based on your goal. Gray coverage tends to need maintenance sooner than an all-over gloss-type refresh.
I’ve had clients come in with hair that was stripped or heat damaged, and over time we got it back to a fuller, healthier head of curls. Color can absolutely fit into that kind of long-term plan when we’re honest about what your hair can handle right now.
A few Hartsdale-first timer tips I wish everyone knew
Here’s the part that usually makes people relax: you don’t need to know all the color words. You just need to tell me what you want your hair to do in real life. Cover gray. Look softer around your face. Stop feeling washed out. Then I’ll translate that into a plan that makes sense for your hair.
One detail I don’t skip is checking the condition of your hair before I commit to a color direction. People come to me for “the works, ” but they stay because I take hair health seriously through the process. That’s also why I’m upfront about timing. If you’re planning to run errands or grab something to eat near Hartsdale Four Corners or the Central Avenue corridor after your appointment, it helps to give yourself a real window.
If you’re ready to book your first color in Hartsdale, call or email me and tell me two things: what you’re hoping to change, and what you’ve done to your hair in the last year. I’ll take it from there.

First time color FAQs (quick answers, no pressure)
How long will my first Color appointment take?
Plan for about 1.5 to 3 hours for a first visit. The color service itself may be quicker, but first-timers need consultation time, hair assessment, and sometimes a test step so we get it right.
Will coloring damage my hair and how can I protect it?
Color doesn’t have to wreck your hair, but it does require smart choices. The biggest protectors are honest hair history, choosing a realistic goal for your current condition, using color-safe products, deep conditioning weekly, and limiting high heat between appointments.
Do I need a patch test before getting Color?
Not always, but I may recommend one if you’ve had reactions before, you’re sensitive, or we’re using a product that’s new to you. It’s a simple safety step that can prevent a bigger problem.
Can I bring a photo of the shade I want to my Color appointment?
Yes, please do. Photos help me see what you mean, especially with tones like warm, cool, copper, or ash. Bring a couple options and I’ll tell you what’s realistic for your hair right now.
How soon can I wash my hair after getting Color?
A common guideline is to wait about 24 to 48 hours before shampooing, since it can help the color settle. If I want you to do something different based on your service, I’ll tell you before you leave.
